When a guest is operating an automobile, boat or motorized vehicle and the vehicle causes damage to a property, the auto (or boat) policy for the vehicle has primary responsibility for the damage.
This can include cars, trucks, RVs, boats, jet skis, and third-party rented golf cart where the vehicle has insurance required for operating.
Auto or boat insurance is primary insurance in the case of an accident caused when operating the vehicle. These policies will generally provide higher limits of coverage which ensure you receive maximum benefit to get repairs paid. Safely insurance provides excess coverage to the primary insurance and can cover any gaps as long as the damage qualifies for coverage under the Safely policy. In the case of the Safely policy, it can provide coverage if the damage is caused by the guest and the damage is to the property rented by the guest.
Follow these steps to file a claim involving vehicle damage:
- Get the insurance information for the driver or person responsible. The information needs to list the insured’s name, insurance company name, policy number, and insurance company’s contact information, including phone number.
- Call the insurance company and state that you want to file a claim. Provide details about the claim as requested by the insurance company. Request a claim number.
- If a claim number isn’t immediately available, ask who you can follow-up with to get the claim number.
- If the guest caused the damage and the reservation was insured by Safely, open a claim in your Safely portal and save it in Draft status. In the claim, include the other insurance company’s information.
- Do not submit the claim until you have a settlement with the other insurance company. By opening a Safely claim in Draft, you have met the 60-day requirement to notify Safely of the potential claim.
- If the other insurance does not cover the full loss, add the details of what the other insurance paid for and the information about the total claim (e.g. photos, receipts) to the previously drafted Safely claim and submit the claim to Safely.
